Yellow Cab brings wheelchair accessible taxi service to Galveston
Galveston (May 17, 2007) – People who use wheelchairs now have the option of choosing wheelchair accessible taxi service in Galveston!
“Over the years, we’ve had many calls for a taxi service that is accessible to people who use wheelchairs or electric scooters,” explains Ray Groh, general manager of Yellow Cab. “Demand for this service is especially heavy from the cruise lines and from UTMB. Dorothy Driver was always the first to offer her services to the mobility impaired population whenever possible. But her vehicle was just a standard sedan.

Years ago, prior to her career as an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab, Dorothy was a certified nurse assistant at the Turner Geriatric Center. “I don’t feel like I’m a complete person unless I can give of myself,” says Dorothy. “It makes me feel good to be able to really help somebody.” Before she bought her new wheelchair accessible vehicle, Dorothy struggled to load wheelchairs into the trunk of her sedan, often having to ask for assistance.
Dorothy finds it easy to load passengers who use wheelchairs or electric scooters in her 2007 Dodge Caravan. The vehicle’s ramp has a gentle slope and is specially equipped to accommodate up to three passengers, including two people using wheelchairs or scooters. “I can just roll them in, secure their chairs, and go!” she says. Taxi fare for the wheelchair accessible vehicles is identical to all taxi rates in Galveston.
